Some fans of British novelist Beryl Bainbridge may deem it tokenistic, others may be heartened she is getting some much-overdue praise. The Man Booker Prizes website has announced that a special Bainbridge is set to win a special, posthumous Booker. Though much-lauded and awarded in her lifetime, Bainbridge never won the Booker despite being shortlisted 5 times. The unique feat won her the moniker ‘the Booker bridesmaid’ from the Brit-lit press. Members of the public can vote for which of the 5 they think is the best novel. The novel garnering the most votes will win Bainbridge her Booker prize, the Man Booker Best of Beryl prize. The winning novel will be announced in mid-April.
