How is the world’s perception of China being shaped by the Chinese government? Recent studies by organisations such as Freedom House have shown an exponential increase in China’s global media footprint, and suggest that the Chinese Communist Party employs tactics of suppression, journalistic engagement, and ‘re-education’ to promote its agenda internationally. Louisa Lim is a former China correspondent for NPR and BBC, a Stella Prize and Walkley Award-shortlisted author, and a senior lecturer at the University of Melbourne. In this wide-ranging conversation, Lim will reflect on her journalistic experience and research, discussing the myriad ways in which China wields its power on the global stage – from Beijing to Hong Kong, the US and Australia.
For in-depth insider analysis of current affairs, it doesn’t get any better than The Fifth Estate. This long-running series, hosted by Sally Warhaft, is a mainstay of the Wheeler Centre’s programme, and of public conversation in Melbourne.
