Jock Serong has won praise for his probing historical novels Preservation and The Burning Island, which earned him the ARA Historical Novel Prize, the Colin Roderick Award, the Ned Kelly Award for First Fiction and, internationally, the inaugural Staunch Prize (UK) and the Historia Award for Historical Crime Fiction (France). Serong’s latest book, The Settlement, explores the origins of the Wybalenna settlement on Flinders Island in the Bass Strait. By delicately unpicking the colonial apparatus that enabled Wybalenna, Serong shines a light on the horrors of the past and explores the role of collective responsibility in the face of cruelty. For the final Books and Ideas at Montalto for the year, Serong joins author Lucy Treloar to discuss his approach to uncovering untold histories and the complexities of colonial stories in 2022.
Presented in partnership with Montalto.
