Fall back in love with 1996’s Cannes Camera d’Or winner – Australia’s own darkly funny romance satire Love Serenade – at this live table read directed by Corrie Chen (Wentworth, New Gold Mountain).

Following the success of MIFF 68½’s John Sheedy–directed table read of Death in Brunswick, starring Paula Arundell, Daniel Henshall and John Leary, MIFF and the Wheeler Centre are back with another live script-reading extravaganza.

Described by critics upon its release as a ‘deliciously black comedy of love’ (Northern Herald), ‘consistently amusing and charming’ (Variety) and “one of the front-runners in the best field of Australian films to come along in years” (Sydney Morning Herald), Love Serenade is a sweet, skewering story of two sisters lamenting their dead-end, small-town lives and deciding to compete for the affections of a minor radio celebrity.

Taking its title from a famously erotic Barry White song, Shirley Barrett’s acclaimed feature debut starred Rebecca Frith as rambunctious Vicki-Ann, Miranda Otto as wayward Dimity, and George Shevtsov as the mid-40s, washed-up “Drivetime King of Brisbane Radio” the siblings inexplicably vie for.

This special event marks the 25th anniversary of a milestone film in Australian cinema’s 1990s golden age.
