What constitutes a trend? Can they be predicted and quantified? And how do trends in the broader culture influence the creation of new artworks? In this conversation, artists Jordan Prosser and David Finnigan – creators of the Melbourne Knowledge Week event, CrimeForce: LoveTeam – will discuss themes of futurism in art and beyond. With cultural strategist and insights specialist Stephanie Winkler, they’ll discuss how predictions and insights from wider culture can be conveyed through artistic practice.
Prosser and Finnigan’s interactive performance work explores the future of pop music, DNA databases and genetic surveillance. Winkler uses stories and data from her surroundings to uncover unique insights about trends in media and culture. Together, they’ll interrogate the intersections of trend forecasting, scenario building and artistic practice

David Finnigan
David Finnigan is a playwright and theatre-maker from Canberra. He was 2006 writer-in-residence for Tanghalang Pilipino, the key government-funded theatre company in the Philippines. He has since worked in Manila as a writer, curator and producer, including collaborating with Sipat Lawin on Gobyerno for South Korea's Festival B:om, Foreignoy for the Arts Centre Melbourne, and Are You Ready for the 2020 AsiaTOPA in Melbourne. David's scripts have been nominated for every major playwriting award in the country, including the Queensland Premier's Literary Award, the Patrick White Award and the Max Afford. In 2017 his playscript Kill Climate Deniers was awarded the Griffin Playwrights Award: it has since been produced in more than 10 cities worldwide. David’s solo show You’re Safe Til 2024 was performed at the Sydney Opera House in 2019. David is a Churchill Fellow, an Asialink Arts Fellow and an Australia Council Early Career Fellow.

Stephanie is a cultural strategist and insights specialist from Melbourne. She currently works as a Director for Crowd DNA, following five years as Head of Insight at VICE Media Group APAC. Steph uses data to tell stories and uncover the unique human truths that help brands make a genuine connection with culture. From rebranding condom companies to building new beverage products, her background in youth media, marketing, research and analytics has given her a wide breadth of experience across many categories in Australia, Asia and beyond. She is an accomplished keynote speaker, frequenting events like Pause Festival, AdWeek APAC, REMIX, YMA and Future Of Culture.
