Blue whale voices have dropped the equivalent of three white keys on the piano in recent years. Why? What role have humans played in this and other changes to the lives of these mysterious and charismatic creatures? And how has our understanding of – and interaction with – whales been affected by technology?

The new book by Rebecca Giggs, Fathoms: the world in the whale, is a riveting work of narrative non-fiction, combining science reporting with personal reflections and lyrical prose.

Join Giggs for a digital scavenger hunt – including conversation, archival photography, video footage, whale music and more – as we dive deep into the world of whales. We'll find out where they're thriving and where they're threatened as Giggs guides us through the lives of these majestic creatures, and answers your questions. Take the plunge on 1 July.

This event includes immersive audio and whale sounds. We recommend using headphones for the best possible experience.
