Here’s a free kick for the school holidays: a morning of footy talk and fun at the Wheeler Centre.
Alicia Sometimes and Nicole Hayes are writers, broadcasters and mad football fans. They’re two voices from the cult Outer Sanctum Aussie Rules podcast and the authors of a new book for kids, The Footy Girl’s Guide to the Stars of 2017. The book is a must-read for young footballers, profiling some of the brightest stars in the new Women’s League.
They’ll be joined by Collingwood recruit Emma King who, at 22, is one of the club’s leading stars, a member of the AFL Players’ Association Women’s Advisory Committee – and, outside the game, a qualified architect.
What were the weirdest facts Alicia and Nicole learned when interviewing the players? Which female footballers will be the legends of the future? What’s it like to play in the Women’s League, and what were some of the best plays of its first season?
Sporty kids of all ages are welcome for this free hour of footy fandom.

Emma King
Emma King, 22, is one of Collingwood Football Club's marquee players for the inaugural AFL Women's League season. Raised in Perth, she graduated from the University of Western Australia with a Bachelor of Design (Architecture) in 2015. She's a member of the AFL Players Association Women's Advisory Committee.
After watching her brother play Auskick, she insisted on being signed up herself, and subsequently played Auskick and Juniors (up to under-14s) with the boys. She joined the Joondalup Falcons' women's team at 14, and at 19, the Coastal Titans – with whom she won the 2015 WAWFL Premiership. She jointly won the 2016 WAWFL Best and Fairest Award (with Kiara Bowers), and was drafted to Collingwood as a marquee player in August 2016, prompting a move to Melbourne.
