Find it hard to keep up with The Next Big Thing in books and writing? We’re here to help. The Next Big Thing is all about showcasing exciting new writers – those we believe are ones to watch.
Each month, we’ll focus on a different Australian state or territory, starting with our home base of Victoria in March, then New South Wales in April, and another region in May.
This is a golden opportunity to discover the work of writers hand-picked by us from around Australia, in the cosy surrounds of The Moat, where you can enjoy a drink and a bite as you’re entertained and enlightened.
These are the literary stars of tomorrow. Come and hear from them today.
For this month, our guests are Joel Meares, Robyn Cadwallader, Oliver Mol and Drew Rooke.

Robyn Cadwallader
Robyn Cadwallader has published numerous prize-winning short stories, as well as a book of poetry and a non-fiction book based on her PhD thesis concerning attitudes to virginity and women in the Middle Ages.
Formerly an academic at Flinders University, she now lives among vineyards outside Canberra.
Oliver Mol
Oliver Mol is a Sydney-based writer. He is a staff writer at The Adventure Handbook. He is 26. He grew up between America and Australia.
He has lived in Houston, Brisbane, Sydney and Melbourne. He was the recipient of a 2014 ArtStart Grant, the co-winner of the 2013 Scribe Nonfiction Prize for Young Writers and the recipient of a 2012 Hot Desk Fellowship.
He has appeared at Emerging Writers' Festival and Melbourne Writers Festival. He has read creative non-fiction at the Museum of Contemporary Art. He has interned at The Lifted Brow, was a fiction editor at Voiceworks and is part of the Stilts Collective. His debut book Lion Attack! will be out through Scribe Publications early 2015. He is excited about life.
Joel Meares
Joel Meares is the arts editor of Sydney Morning Herald and former editor of Time Out Sydney. A regular contributor to Good Weekend and Wired, Joel has also worked at the Columbia Journalism Review in New York, where he won a Mirror Award for profile writing, and at (sydney) magazine.
He grew up Catholic near Maroubra Beach but shows little sign of either.

Drew Rooke
Drew Rooke is a Sydney-based non-fiction writer whose work deals with contemporary political and cultural issues and trends. His work has appeared in Meanjin, The Lifted Brow, Voiceworks, Junkee, the Sydney Morning Herald and Stilts Journal.
