Festival director and composer Jonathan Mills has worked across the arts and sees their role in our society as essential. In his words: “In a sense this lecture is not really about the State of the Arts at all – it’s about the state of our world and the role that the arts can play in it and how imaginative and open-minded we wish that world to be.”
We have also published a response to this lecture by theatre critic and blogger Alison Croggon entitled Ways of Meaning.

Look, I'm sorry - but I can't help seeing Arnold Schwarzeneggar in *Junior* every time I look at Jonathan Mills' video.
Good speech though. Relieved that his solution isn't tied to funding and institutionalising our way out of it.
Cosmopolitanism? I wonder if he reads *Monocle*.
