Murong Xuecun is a leading contemporary Chinese author. His debut novel prompted authorities to convene a conference solely to critique it, while his more recent work has seen him assuming the role of investigative journalist.

In conversation with Jenny Niven, Xuecun discusses his sometimes controversial characters and explores the challenges that face an ‘independent’ writer in modern China.

Parts of this presentation are in Mandarin Chinese, with translation provided.
