After a spate of natural disasters, civic scandals and financial crises, many citizens of the world’s richest nations are looking for someone to shoulder the blame, led by their politicians, community leaders and media.
But are we forgetting our blessings – and are these catastrophes being misrepresented?
In this Lunchbox/Soapbox presentation, ABC Melbourne broadcaster Jon Faine questions our growing culture of complaint and asks if, instead, our expectations are unfair.
Faine takes issue with politicians, businesspeople and media outlets who exploit public sentiment to their own advantage. In so doing, he challenges us to remember that we are, after all, the ‘lucky country’.

John,
Say that Melbourne is not the best and coolest city in the world as sometimes it's not!!
Hate cool lists!!
If money is no object new York looks pretty damn fine to me.
A selfish and greedy bourgeois that raises the little darlings that think they can do and say anything they want as we live in a "free and democratic society."
I hate this cliche as some marketing executives sit around tables devising ideas and concepts for the most live-able city concept.
A revolution of ideas is required HERE AND NOW!!

I would like to use the g.l.b.t.i community as an example of not appreciating what they have got and the arrogance in going about to achieve it to some degree.
On a global scale same sex rights and anti-discrimination laws in Australia are some of the Best in The World in comparison to many other countries except same sex marriage.
They have their own radio station and a are very high profile mardi gras to the wider community as we have seen this week.
it is an affluent community( the pink dollar) and they know it and sometimes use this to their own advantage as with other lobby groups.
It is self serving and a victim of it"s own success to some degree.
Patience is a virtue and a time will come when they will celebrate the right to marry as well.
We are sometimes self serving in nature and forget the bigger picture.
It gets ridiculous at times! A bit more balance people and stop complaining.

I agree with you, Jon. So much so, it has put me offside with my extended family. Oh well. C'este la vie on that one. Thought it was funny though, that to make your point you were complaining! :)
