Hanifa Deen is fed up with writing about Muslims, reading about Muslims, defending Muslims and obsessing about Muslims in general but is having trouble getting off the ‘Muslim merry-go-round’.
In this Lunchbox/Soapbox presentation, Deen offers her vision for extending multiculturalism beyond tokenism. She also warns against oversimplification and the temptation to see ‘communities’ rather than individuals, and suggests a marketing campaign for Muslims – including a handful of star recruits who might help to bring Islam to the Australian heartland.

She's right about the burqa and the balaclava, and I liked how she says our conservative politicians aren't suddenly becoming feminists. But she's wrong on Ayaan Hirsi Ali.

Thank you Hanifa Deen! I am sorry I missed this soapbox. Her comments perfectly frame the issues around the various arguements relating to the burqa, multicultralism, securalism, immigration and the politics of fear.
I feel she has described Ayaan Hirsi Ali perfectly!

Unexpectedly hilarious, endearing argument from Deen. Didn't get to go to this but am so very glad to have been able to watch it in the comfort of my own internet.

We've all heard the phrase "The pen is mightier than the sword." Today, in 2010 in the English speaking world, I say "The articulate intellectual sister (female) who has a great sense of humour delivering profound messages to her audience is mightier than a bearded "mujahid" brother (male)!" Excellent presentation, well spoken Sr Hanifa - we need more of your kind in Australia and the world. I enjoyed your presentation immensely. Please don't ever get "tired' and 'fed up". :)

Wow! What an inspiring, intelligent, witty presentation. Wish it could be compulsory viewing for all non Muslims. We need more voices like Hanifa Deen.

She started out a little smug and superior but got better. it's good to hear a voice from within the Muslim community, if such a beast actually exists...

Thought provoking - Deen challenges our notions of a fair, just and compassionate Australian society as much as she challenges the sterotypes that exists of Muslims. It is time we think about how we want our country to evolve and become stronger.

Haneefa Deen always breaks new ground and that is what she has done in this presentation also. She has assured Australians, in a typical Australian style, that Muslims are not from Mars and that they are as normal human beings as Irish or members of anyother community!
There is another aspect also: The Muslim World is in dire need of representatives like Haneefa who understand sensitivities of modern world far better than the typical old guard. Her expertise and insight should be utilised at national as well as international level.
