Greg Barns

Greg Barns is a barrister and writer. He is national president of the Australian Lawyers Alliance and practices in the areas of criminal law and human rights in Tasmania, Victoria and Western Australia. He is a member of the Bar in each of those jurisdictions.

Greg appeared for one of the accused in the Melbourne terrorism trial in 2008. He regularly acts for asylum seekers and prisoners. Greg is a former political adviser to a number of premiers and ministers at the federal level. He left the Liberal Party in 2002 because of his opposition to its policies on asylum seekers.

Greg writes a weekly column for the Hobart Mercury, and writes for The Drum, the South China Morning Post, Crikey and the Age. He is the author of three books on Australian politics.
